Stripes Are the Pattern to Know This Season

Stripes have never really gone away, but this season they’ve come back to take over. After a long stretch of hushed, minimal dressing, fashion is turning up the volume, and stripes are leading the charge.

The Spring/Summer 2027 season began in New York with bold stripes that simply couldn’t go unnoticed. Proenza Schouler and Tommy Hilfiger sent out head-to-toe stripes in seasonal palettes, and Diane von Furstenberg showed a rainbow-striped top with slouchy long shorts.

Why the Stripe Always Wins

A stripe is the most democratic pattern there is. It works on a boardroom shirt and a beach cover-up, and it flatters almost any body. It’s graphic without being fussy, and every placement tells a different story.

A vertical stripe lengthens the body. A horizontal one adds playful rhythm. A hand-dyed wave stripe feels like a craft heirloom. And since a stripe is a neutral at heart, it gets along with florals, embroidery and tassels.

Paris Did the Stripe Properly

Paris Fashion Week SS27 ran from 28 September to 6 October, and the striped shirt loosened its office ties, returning with sculpted hems, glossy surfaces and deliberately oversized proportions.

Dior showed a pale blue striped shirt that flared from the waist, with a crisp white collar and fan-pleated cuffs. Akris carried the pattern across matching trousers for chic off-duty co-ordination. At Ester Manas, fine green stripes ran across an oversized shirt with dropped shoulders, an uneven hem and frayed detailing.

Anderson’s Dior also mixed patterns, pairing a striped shirt with a floral trumpet skirt. Even the heavier classics got a lighter touch: pinstripe, tartan and houndstooth were rendered seemingly light as air. And in the wild corner, Chanel showed tiger-striped bouclé in black, gold and cream.

The Stripe, Softened: Dresses and Draped Tops

The easiest way into the trend is a single piece that does all the talking. The stripe-print midi dress is the clean, summery answer: a cotton creation with a sweetheart neckline, a fitted bodice and a criss-cross cutout back. The stripes run through its flared skirt like a breeze, making it an easy pick for sunlit brunches and slow summer afternoons.

For something quieter, Tarun Tahiliani’s knotted one-shoulder top in ivory is texture first, stripe second. The ribbing is subtle, the fabric is semi-sheer, and the knot at the shoulder does the sculpting. It sits somewhere between Indian drape and Western asymmetry, proving that the stripe trend doesn’t always need to announce itself to make an impression.

Stripes Get Tailored: Sets, Jackets and Barrel Pants

This is where the Paris shirt-and-trouser energy translates beautifully. Needleten’s olive striped barrel pants in silk tissue bring vertical lines into the mix, with pleats at the waist and hem lending structure to their relaxed, rounded silhouette. They’re the kind of brunch trousers that do all the talking, especially when paired with a fitted top and understated accessories.

The Lite jacket takes a more dramatic approach to stripes. This ankle-length blue-and-white cotton layer features a high collar, chording details and drop sleeves, giving it the presence of a statement coat with the ease of a cover-up. Throw it over a simple outfit when you want the stripes to take centre stage, or style it as a lightweight layer for a resort-ready look.

The sets keep things polished but playful. The off-white crepe pant set pairs a striped-fabric shirt with matching trousers, while floral embroidery at the waist, hem and cuffs adds a softer, more intricate touch. It’s a reminder that stripes and embellishment can share the spotlight without competing, making this set an elegant option for daytime celebrations and dressed-up lunches.

The blazer and shorts set borrows from the Rajasthani leheriya wave, bringing a craft-inspired twist to the classic stripe. The sleeveless cotton blazer, lined shorts and fringed tie-up belt give the look a relaxed, resort-ready feel. With its rippling pattern and playful proportions, it’s a fresh way to wear stripes when traditional straight lines feel a little too predictable.

How to Style Stripes Without Missing a Beat

Let Solids Do the Talking

Stripes may be having a moment, but they don’t need to do all the heavy lifting. Pair a striped shirt with tailored black trousers, a striped skirt with a crisp white top, or striped pants with a simple tank. Solid colours give the pattern room to breathe, while denim, beige and ivory keep things effortlessly chic. Think of them as the supporting cast that lets your stripes take the spotlight.

Play with Proportions

The trick to making stripes feel modern is knowing when to go big and when to keep things fitted. An oversized striped shirt looks sharp with slim trousers or straight-leg denim, while a fitted striped top pairs beautifully with wide-leg pants or a flowing skirt. The contrast keeps the outfit from feeling too uniform, giving even the simplest combinations a little more personality.

Take the Vertical Route

Vertical stripes have a way of drawing the eye along the length of an outfit, creating a sleek, elongated effect. Try them on tailored trousers, a co-ord set or a column dress for a look that feels polished without trying too hard. Keep the accessories minimal and let the lines do their thing.

Mix Your Prints, Not Your Signals

Stripes and florals might seem like unlikely companions, but together they can make an outfit feel wonderfully expressive. Try a fine-striped shirt with a floral skirt, or bring polka dots into the mix for a playful clash of patterns. The secret is to find a shared colour that ties everything together. Let one print lead while the other plays along, and the result feels eclectic rather than chaotic.

Colour Outside the Lines

Black and white stripes will always have their place, but this season calls for a little more colour. Think cobalt blue, cherry red, butter yellow and soft pastels that bring a fresh energy to the classic pattern. Pick a shade from your striped piece and repeat it in your bag, shoes or jewellery for a look that feels considered without being overly coordinated.
